Raga Cycle I–II-IV is a collaborative album series by vocalist and composer Ina Filip and composer and pianist Michael Harrison, bringing Hindustani raga into dialogue with contemporary composition. The works weave together Harrison’s distinctive harmonic language, just intonation, and influences of minimalism with Ina Filip’s vocal and compositional practice, including her explorations of polyphony. Each cycle is rooted in ragas associated with a particular time of day, unfolding through voice, piano, electronics and improvisation.
The first installment, Evening Light: Raga Cycle I, was completed with Harrison and released in 2026. Following his death, Filip is continuing the realization of Raga Cycle II and IV from the music and materials they developed together, completing the trilogy as a posthumous continuation of their collaboration.
24 HOURS @ ONCE
2024–ongoing · IMMERSIVE AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION
24 Hours @ Once is an immersive installation created in collaboration with Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Bill Morrison. Bringing together twenty-four live video feeds from locations around the world, projected simultaneously, with a spatialized live performance of music from Raga Cycle, the work reflects on our experience of global presence and time.
Premiered at RPI in New York in 2024, 24 Hours @ Once is conceived as an evolving long-term project, taking new forms as it continues to develop.
PASSAGE
2023 · IMMERSIVE AUDIOVISUAL INSTALLATION
Passage is an immersive installation conceived by composer Michael Harrison in collaboration with artist Nina Elder, exploring celestial and human time through music, light and space. As one of the project’s co-composers, Ina Filip contributed to the creation and recording of its raga-based music, alongside Harrison, Elliot Cole and Benoît Rolland. Combining just-intonation piano with voice, tabla and electronics, the music was spatialized throughout the installation as shifting light and shadow evoked the movement of celestial time.
Presented at the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University in North Carolina, USA, Passage was shown in conjunction with Elder’s Time Pieces, a series of graphite drawings contemplating impermanence and transformation, Passage invited audiences to experience their own presence within larger rhythms of time and space.
MEMORY
2022 · ELECTRONIC MUSIC · FILM
Memory is an electronic vocal work created in collaboration with Adham Shaikh and C# Orchestra. The piece explores bringing some elements of Dhrupad vocal practice into a pop context, layering them with polyphony and vocal harmonies.
The music was later developed into a film with video artist Johnny Ranger, shot in the forests surrounding Val-David in the Laurentians. Philippe Fleury’s large-scale wooden land-art installations become part of the landscape, while Ranger’s singular visual imagination transforms the imagery through subtle animation, shifting colours and rays of light. The result brings together music, film, land art and the Laurentian forest in a richly collaborative visual world.
POLYPHONIC MALKAUNS
2021 · ALBUM · VOCAL COMPOSITION
Conceived by contemporary composer and Dhrupad vocalist Payton MacDonald and developed in close collaboration with Ina Filip, Polyphonic Malkauns explores an unusual meeting of Dhrupad and Western polyphony through the framework of Raga Malkauns. The album takes a radically different approach to a traditionally solo form: at times, as many as eight male and female voices unfold simultaneously, spanning an exceptional vocal range and creating a dense, shifting polyphonic fabric.
Following the traditional progression of raga development—alap, jod and jhala—the work reimagines each stage through multiple independent voices inhabiting and developing the raga at once. The result is a distinctive experiment in polyphonic raga, bringing two musical languages together in a form rarely encountered in either tradition.
CANTOS DE MA
2017 · ALBUM · VOCAL COMPOSITION
Cantos de Ma grew out of Ina Filip’s Dhrupad practice of sustaining a single note for extended periods of time, listening into its resonance and into the silence surrounding it. Built around the alap development of Raga Megh, the album draws on Dhrupad vocal technique alongside subtle Brazilian vocal influences, occasional polyphony, and long expanses of silence.
Produced by Adham Shaikh, the album features C# Orchestra on fretless guitar and Hanna Winzentzen on vichitra veena. Within this sparse instrumentation, the voice remains at the centre, exploring the inner life of a note—its overtones, movement and gradual transformation.
